What Is The Difference Between Omega 3 And Omega 6 Fatty Acids?

August 21st, 2010 Charles Comments off

Both omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are essential fats, i.e. both of them are necessary for proper growth and development of body, but the body cannot produce either of them; hence, we have to take them explicitly through the dietary sources. So, what is the difference between omega 3 and omega 6 fats? Which one of them is most needed by the body? Read on to find out.

Structurally, the difference between these fats is the position of double bond between carbon-carbon molecules. In 3, bond is present at third location, while in 6, bond is at sixth carbon-carbon molecules.

However, in terms of benefits, the difference between omega 3 and omega 6 fats is huge. 3 type fats have blood-thinning properties; therefore, they inhibit the plaque buildup on the arterial wall and hence help in reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. They reduce cholesterol and triglycerides levels in the body and maintain the blood pressure. The anti-inflammatory property of these fats is very effective in controlling body’s inflammation cycle and are of help in conditions like arthritis, psoriasis, etc.

6 type fats on the other hand are beneficial for healthy skin, hair, and nails. These fats help in maintaining hormonal balance and a healthy state of mind. They are effective in reducing menstrual pain and regulating the metabolic rate of the body.

Studies have proven that for a healthy body, one has to maintain a proper balance between both these essential fats. Experts recommend that for each part of omega3 there should be four parts of omega6 fats.

6 type fats are present in various oils like sunflower oil, pumpkin oil, hemp oil, corn oil, etc while 3 type fats are present in cold-water fish like hoki, tuna, salmon, etc.

However, because of the eating habits, (we eat lot of processed and oily food) the ratio of omega6 to omega3 fats has risen to 20:1. Therefore, to reduce this imbalance, there is a huge need to consume more of omega3 fats.

Now that you know what is the difference between omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, and which fatty acid you should consume more to lead a healthy and ail-free life.

What is your next step? Spend some more time on internet, find out an effective dietary source of omega three fats, and start taking it immediately.

Discover Pure 3 Omega 3

July 29th, 2010 Charles Comments off

Did you know the company that manufactures pur 3 omega 3 claims that their fish oil formula is the most effective product of its kind, but is it really?  When most people shop for nutritional supplements they sometimes don’t really understand what it is that they need to be looking for.  Let me explain to you a little bit about what a high quality fish oil product needs to contain, and how much it must contain to be effective.

N-3 fatty acids are necessary in order to counteract the negative effects produced by all of the n-6 fatty acids in our system.  Our diets generally revolve around foods that contain as much as 8 times more n-6 fatty acids than n-3s, and the truth is that if you don’t find a way to balance out the ratio between these two omega fatty acid types you are going to find yourself in trouble.

Excessive levels of n-6 fatty acids can lead to the development of a variety of diseases such type two diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, asthma, and inflammatory bowel disease.  The reason that so many people are stricken with these ailments is because of the inflammation that n-6 fatty acids begin to emit when called into service by the immune system to help to fight off illness and expedite healing.

Both n-6 and n-3 fatty acids are used by the immune system for healing purposes, but only one of them has the ability to “turn off” inflammation production once the job is complete.  N-6 fatty acids continue to emit inflammation to the point where it begins to cause damage to the organs and soft tissue.  This can all be avoided by increasing your levels of omega 3s.

Omega 3 fatty acids also have anti-inflammatory abilities, and because of this they are able to put a stop to the inflammation that n-6 fatty acids are producing.  The best way for you to increase your levels of n-3 fatty acids is to begin taking a daily omega 3 DHA fish oil nutritional supplement every day.  I am going to explain to you what you need to look for in a quality fish oil product.

The Pur fish oil is touted by the manufacturer to be one of the most effective supplements out there, but when you look at it the product is not quite as good as it is advertised to be.  This formula provides you with 120mg of DHA, which is the most important of the n-3 fatty acids, and 180mg of EPA.  The truth is that this product does not provide you with enough DHA, while offering more EPA than you need.

Make no mistake about it.  Your body will likely not process all of the EPA into the DHA you really need, so what you need is a formula that offers more than 250mg of DHA, and only about 120mg of EPA.  Despite the manufacturer’s claims pur 3 omega 3 doesn’t offer you exactly what you need, which means you will have to find a formula that is better suited to giving you the benefits you need.

Omega 3 And Pregnancy – What Is The Right Time To Start?

July 29th, 2010 Charles Comments off

Are you wondering about the relationship that omega 3 and pregnancy share? And what is the right time for you to start having it? Is it before pregnancy, during pregnancy or after pregnancy?

Answer is – the sooner the better and longer the duration you are on omega 3 the healthier it is for you and for your unborn child.

Dosage of omega3 is similar to any other diet where one should maintain the regularity and never exceed the normal limits. Studies have shown that results are much more positive if it is taken regularly over a long period of time. Of all the forms of omega3, DHA is very useful and plays an important role in functional behavior of many of our body organs.

As soon as you get to know the existence of a new life in you – you can start having DHA. Or I would say even before this. This helps you in conceiving too. Once you have conceived it is very important that you maintain the required levels of omega 3 in your body. Fetus is totally dependent on you for all the required nutrients and needs essential fatty acids for the development of brain, eye and nervous system. This required DHA is passed through the placenta to the fetus.

Many females are advised to take omega 3 in their third trimester, as this is the time when brain of fetus develops the most. It has been observed that premature babies have lower levels of DHA. Since they have not gone full term, they get omega 3 benefits for less duration. This is the reason, that omega 3 supplements should not be confined to just third trimester instead should be taken throughout the pregnancy.

A high quality omega 3 and pregnancy is an indomitable blend. You should continue the dosages of DHA after your delivery too, as it keeps both mother and baby healthy.

For the first few months the infant is totally dependent on mother’s milk, it’s all the more important for you to continue your dose of DHA during this period as well. Clinical studies have proved that breast-fed babies have better IQ advantages over babies fed on infant formula without DHA.  It also helps the child in better eye hand coordination and fewer sleep disorders.  Studies have proved that women who are on rich diet of omega 3 have less chances of breast cancer and post natal depression.

Benefits of DHA do not end here; it does a lot more that what we discussed above to you and your family. Visit my website to know more on the omega 3 and pregnancy where I have described an effective DHA supplement that I and my family take daily.
