How to find the Purest Omega 3

PUR 3 omega 3 is one brand of fish oil on the market.  Whether or not it is the purest or the best brand in other ways may be a matter of personal opinion.  But, one thing’s for sure, regardless of what brand you buy, you need to check out the manufacturer.

Most supplement manufacturers are reputable, enough.  But, environmentalists would like to see some of them put out of business.

Not to mention any names, but one company sucks thousands of tons of menhaden out of the Chesapeake Bay on a regular basis.  The vacuums they use to accomplish that have damaged the bay’s floor and endangered the entire ecosystem.  The Chesapeake Bay is among the most delicate areas, on an environmental level, of the US.

The menhaden serves a number of purposes in the bay.  It is a filter fish that cleans toxins out of the water.  Birds and larger fish depend on it for food.  The companies use the menhaden not as people food, but as fishmeal.  Fishmeal is food for farm animals and for farmed fish, like Atlantic salmon.

Fish oils are a byproduct of fishmeal production.  But, there are other species that are less important to the environment.  So, if you see that the species used in your favorite brand of fish oil is menhaden, consider switching brands.  Be a friend of the Chesapeake Bay.

Fish oil is a better choice than marine algae or flaxseed, from a health standpoint.  Marine algae are grown in bioreactors, so there is no worry about mercury or other impurities.  But, it provides only DHA or Docosahexaenoic acid.

The body can convert DHA to EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) one of the other important omega-3s, but since it needs both of them for normal brain development and function, a deficiency of either could be a problem.

Flaxseed provides only alpha-linolenic acid or ALA.  Some conversion of ALA to the other omega-3s occurs in the body, but not nearly enough to keep blood levels of DHA high.

Low blood levels of DHA are associated with depressive disorders, schizophrenia and emotional problems of all kinds.  Some researchers believe that the rampant incidence of depression in industrialized societies is due to a lack of DHA in the modern diet.

So, fish oil is your best choice for supplementation.  Whether or not PUR 3 omega 3 is the best choice is another question.
