Trying to figure out what the right fish oil dosage is can be difficult.  It seems that all the information you read has different opinions on how much fish oil to take.

What is Omega 3?

The 3 Omega fatty acids are DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid), EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid), and DPA (Docosapentaenoic Acid).  These are the essential fats that our bodies require on a daily basis.   You can get these fatty acids from eating foods such as fish and some nuts. The problem is most of us don’t eat enough of these things daily to maintain the levels our bodies need, so we need to supplement our intake.

One site talks about how much EPA and DHA to take and the others tell you how many softgels you should take.  This makes it difficult to compare the ingredients of one fish oil supplement to another.

The other thing I’ve found is sites mix up the measurements so it’s hard to compare their fish oil dosage recommendations to an actual product label.

There are two measurements you will read about, they are Grams (g) and Milligrams (mg), almost all ingredient labels will use Milligrams(mg).

To help keep things as clear as possible, I’ll only reference fish oil ingredients in Milligrams (mg) so you can easily refer back to a product label.

What Is The Right Fish Oil Dosage For Adults?

Well, this is a great question!  I say this because it seems every site you look at lists different answers.   I’ve seen websites list anywhere between 500 mg to 6000 mg of omega 3 per day as a recommendation.

This is quite a wide recommendation range, but the fact of the matter is if your a normal healthy person looking to add omega 3 for the prevention of disease then 2000 mg is the fish oil dosage you should consider.   Since most fish oil pills come with 1000 mg of omega 3 in each one, you will need 2 a day.

For those with high cholesterol or special health conditions upwards to 6000 mg per day could be considered, but before taking that high of a fish oil dosage you should consult your doctor.

Above we talked about the fact that a normal fish oil dose is 2000 mg a day, but you also need to watch out for the EPA and DHA levels in each fish oil supplement.

The American Heart Association(AHA) recommends that you take a combination of 500 mg to 1800 mg of EPA and DHA a day.  This level of omega 3’s will help to significantly reduce you risk of heart problems.

What fish oil dosage is right for someone under 18?

Of course anyone under the age of 18 should not take the same fish oil dosage as an adult.   It’s very important to check with you doctor if you child is less that 12 years old.

The bottom line is your young adult should take half the dosage of an adult.  So 1000 mg of omega 3 a day should be perfect for them.

You also will want to make sure that and fish oil supplement that you give your children is made with only the purest omega 3 oils.

Taking too much fish oil can cause some side effects like bad breath and heartburn.  You may be able to get around these effects by keeping you fish oil supplement in your freezer.

So how much is too much?  Well, there are a wide range of opinions on this topic.  I’d say, without doctors orders I wouldn’t take a fish oil dosage of more than 2000 mg of omega 3 a day.

The reason for this is omega-3 acts as a natural blood thinner, just like aspirin does.   So its something you want to watch very carefully if you have any health problems that prevent you from taking aspirin.
